It’s been almost a month since I last blogged, and there have been loads of cobwebs that needed to be swiped off as I attempted to login. Well, the reason for this blogging inactivity is not just due to the lack of any Arsenal action on the field, but it can majorly be attributed to a metamorphosis that has been my life over the past few weeks.
Well, for one, I have left my hometown to a completely new city, full of strangers and strange people. After 12 years in my hometown Mangalore, on the coast of the country, I am now in the heartland of India, Nagpur. It’s almost been a month now since this happened, and adjusting to new environs and people has taken a toll on me physically and mentally. And as a result, blogging has taken a backseat as I take some time to adjust in this new place.
Anyways, I am not here to bore you about my problems. Well, speaking footballistically, there has been nothing exciting going on. Yes, there was the Confederations Cup, and it was delightful to finally see Spain knocked off their perch, or whatever, Brazil deservedly won the tournament, in their own backyard, as they possessed that extra bit of freshness that the Spaniards seemed so devoid of.
On the Arsenal front, there has been very little activity of course. I have been barged by Gonzalo Higuain rumors all summer that I have barely bothered even checking them after one point. News about him being spotted at Gatwick, about him shopping for houses in London, about him going to Tesco to buy diapers, about him going to the vet with his pet hamster, about him visiting Victoria Secret’s outlet in central London, about him going to the loo at 4 in the morning. Ridiculous shit, I say.
What I have learnt supporting Arsenal for over 9 years, is that unless it is on the website, it is not authentic. It is just all bullshit being spewed across the web by jobless journalists with nothing better to do.
Well, the only signing confirmed so far is that of some injury prone young French striker, a recipe for internet humor as Arseblog suggests so often. Yaya Sanogo joined Arsenal from Auxerre on a free transfer, having scored 11 goals in 24 games for the Ligue 2 side last season.
While I am all for signing young French strikers with injury problems, the disappointing fact is that we never end up signing the big names we are linked to every off season, likely with Higuain and even Rooney this time round. Our youth team did offload 17 players recently, and there are efforts going on to bolster the setup with some continental talent, but the first team could be missing out on a player or two that would really help them transform into a title winning unit.
Apart from that, there has been a culling of the squad, with Andrei Arshavin returning to Zenit St. Petersburg, after more than 4 years at Arsenal. Of course, he will be remembered as a cult favorite who eventually lost his way thanks to laziness. His goals against Liverpool and Barcelona will be treasured for years to come, but sadly he was a talent that never really got to shine.
Vito Mannone made the move north-east to Sunderland for £2 million, and the only display worth remembering from the Italian’s time with the club was over 3 seasons ago, at Craven Cottage. Denilson and Sebastien Squillaci were also shown the exit door, and about time. Johan Djourou moved to Hamburg on loan, while Francis Coquelin moves to Freiburg, both on the lookout for more regular first team football.
That of course leaves the squad short on players in almost every position, and it will be interesting to see what unfolds between now and the end of the transfer window. Definitely, we need another centre-back. Whether Le Prof decides to promote Ignasi Miquel or sign another defender from elsewehere is the question.
The midfield looks lightweight, and so far there has been very little talk of signing a robust defensive midfielder. Rumours of resigning Fabregas have all but died down, and no other baseless rumors have surfaced, thankfully.
All talk has been surrounding Higuain, Rooney and now Luis Suarez, who the Guardian claims Arsenal bid £30 million for.
Aaargh! I can’t wait for the bloody season to start already. My insanity needs some cure. Sign some effing players, and get the season started already!
Oh, and in the meanwhile, I will definitely try to be more regular with my blogging! Hang about!
Jai Arsenal 🙂
