Arsenal 2 (Ramsey 25, 72) – 0 Fenerbahce

Man of the Match – Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal)

It was business as usual as Arsenal strolled into the group stages of the Champions League, dispatching another side off at the qualifying stages.

Arsene Wenger, going through a selection headache at the moment, started with Sagna and Mertesacker in the centre of defence. Nacho Monreal was given a start ahead of Kieran Gibbs at left back. In midfield, Jack Wilshere started alongside Aaron Ramsey, while Lukas Podolski started.

Fenerbahce were positive from the start, unlike the inhibited and limited level of performance they put up in Turkey. They almost had a huge slice of luck when Bacary Sagna’s attempted clearance almost ended up in the back of the net, but for a Szczesny clearance.

Arsenal were happy stroking the ball around in midfield, with little foray into the final third. Fenerbahce were able to catch out Arsenal on some quick counterattacks, but looked devoid of any sort of chemistry.

Aaron Ramsey confirmed Arsenal’s progress into the next round, when he volleyed in a Kieran Gibbs cross. It was the Welshman’s third goal against Fenerbahce in 3 games. Theo Walcott struck the cross bar with a free kick, before Arsenal’s injury crisis deepened further, with Lukas Podolski being stretchered off after suffering a hamstring injury.

Slowly, Arsenal started delving into the game with Cazorla, Wilshere and Ramsey combining well to create chances for Walcott and Giroud. Santi Cazorla forced a fine save from Turkish international goalkeeper Volkan Demirel.

Fenerbahce’s best chance when Nigeria international bore down on goal, having hoodwinked Sagna, but could only force a fine save from Szczesny, who pulled off a couple more impressive saves. Ramsey, in fine nick, added icing on the cake, finishing off a slick Arsenal move, with a shot into the bottom left corner.

So, now into the group stages of the Champions League, but we have the big North London derby to tackle this weekend!

Jai Arsenal 🙂
