Arsenal 1 (Sanchez 13) – Southampton 2 (Tadic 20 (pen), Clyne 39)
Man of the Match – Dusan Tadic (Southampton)
Arsenal were knocked out of the Capitol One Cup by high-flying Southampton, at home. The competition, which has been a breeding ground for young Arsenal talent, saw Arsenal fail to clear the first hurdle. Arsene Wenger made several changes to the squad. New signing, David Ospina, Colombia’s World Cup hero started in goal, with the young defence of Hector Bellerin, Callum Chambers, Isaac Hayden and makeshift left-back Francis Coquelin ahead of him. In midfield, Abou Diaby, yes, I repeat Abou Diaby made his return alongside Jack Wilshere. There were starts also for Tomas Rosicky, Lukas Podolski and Joel Campbell; in-form Chilean Alexis.
Alexis Sanchez gave the Gunners the lead with a brilliant free kick on 13 minutes, leaving England international goalkeeper Fraser Forster with no chance at all. However, Southampton were soon back in it, when Tomas Rosicky tipped Mane in the penalty box. Serbian international Dusan Tadic converted the ensuing penalty to make it 1-1. On 39 minutes, came a real blinder, as right back Nathaniel Clyne collected the ball way outside the box from a cleared corner, and smashed it into the top corner of Ospina’s net.
Arsenal did show flashes of a comeback, but were up against a well drilled defense, while the Saints spurned a few chances to take the lead. Arsenal now turn their attention to the Premier League where they face Tottenham and Chelsea in succession.
Jai Arsenal 🙂
