Anderlecht 1 (Najar 71) – Arsenal 2 (Gibbs 89, Podolski 90)
Man of the Match – Emiliano Martinez (Arsenal)
Arsenal left it late, very very late to snatch 3 points from Anderlecht on a tough night of football in Belgium. Young Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez started in goal in place of the suspended Wojciech Szczesny.
Arsenal’s main attacking threat was Alexis Sanchez. On one occasion, he met Santi Cazorla’s curling free kick, but Silvio Proto pushed it away for a save. Anderlecht have now failed to win in 11 Champions League games. Proto was forced to save with his leg, to keep out a Santi Cazorla effort. However, at one point, it seemed Anderlecht would finally break the jinx when Honduran midfielder Andy Najar put the home side into the lead, leaving the Belgian champions on the brink of their first win against English opposition since they stunned Manchester United in 2000.
Ex-Portsmouth defender Anthony van den Borre’s effort spanked against the woodwork, before Najar headed the rebound in. Arsenal bundled home the equalizer when Kieran Gibbs got to the end of a cross from Callum Chambers. And before Anderlecht could regroup, Arsenal hit back within 106 seconds, as Lukas Podolski guided home a low cross from Sanchez, with barely 2 minutes left to play. Arsenal now have 6 points from 3 games, and close to reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Jai Arsenal 🙂
