Sunderland 0 – Arsenal 2 (Sanchez 30, 90)
Man of the Match – Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal)
Arsenal aka Alexis capitalized on two horrendous Sunderland mistakes to register their 3rd league win of the season at the Stadium of Light. On a rather dull day, Arsene Wenger named Theo Walcott on the bench after the England striker returned from injury after 9 months out.
Sunderland, who were thrashed 8-0 by Southampton at St. Mary’s last weekend, showed more resolve and determination against an Arsenal side still struggling to find some semblance of form. Arsenal, on the other hand, looked lackluster just like they have been off late in games against Chelsea, Hull and Anderlecht.
The opening goal was a gift from former Manchester United defender Wes Brown. Unable to control a long ball, he attempted to pass it back to his keeper, former Arsenal goalie Vito Mannone. However, he failed to make clean contact, giving Alexis a free run with the ball. The Chilean made no mistake to put the Gunners into the lead. Arsenal then struggled to get any foothold in the game.
Danny Welbeck skied an effort, before Cazorla committed two howlers. He was set up twice in good positions, but only could find Row Z with his shots. Mannone then denied Chambers with a fine save. Sunderland slowly got into the game, and started dominating midfield in the latter part of the second half. Szczesny was called into action to deny a Jack Rodwell header, and then a Sebastien Larsson plunging shot.
It didn’t matter in the end, though, as an Italian mixup allowed Alexis to make it 2-0. Santiago Vergini passed a loose ball to Vito Mannone, under close surveillance from the Chilean. He fumbled, and the Gunners returned home with 3 points.
Jai Arsenal 🙂
