Arsenal 3 (Ozil 29, Sanchez 33, 69) – Dinamo Zagreb 0

Man of the Match –Β Mesut OzilΒ (Arsenal)

Arsenal secured a much required win against Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb, to keep alive their hopes of qualifying to the next round of the Champions League. Mathieu Flamini started in midfield, in place of the injured Francis Coquelin, while Costa Rican Joel Campbell got a starting berth, in place of the injured duo of Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Despite suffering a 5-1 mauling at the hands of Bayern Munich, Arsenal’s 2-0 win over the Bavarian giants gave them some hope of qualifying. They would now have to better Olympiakos’ 3-2 win at the Emirates, in the return game in Greece, in order to qualify. But, with the 3-0 win against Zagreb, they have given themselves a realistic chance.

Mesut Ozil headed the Gunners into the lead in the 29th minute to ease the nerves of the home side. 4 minutes later, Alexis Sanchez made it 2-0 and the win was sealed in the 69th minute, when Sanchez finished off a fine team move.

West Bromwich Albion (Morrison 35, Arteta (O.G) 40) – Arsenal 1 (Giroud 28)

Man of the Match –Β James McCleanΒ (West Bromwich Albion)

Arsenal succumbed to a disappointing defeat at The Hawthorns, at the hands of West Bromwich Albion, leaving them 4th in the table. The Gunners enjoyed a near perfect October, defeating Manchester United, Watford, Bayern Munich, Everton and Swansea, but November has been tough, having taken a pounding at the hands of Bayern Munich and a home draw with Tottenham.

Arsenal suffered an early blow, when Francis Coquelin had to come off in the 14th minute through an injury, to be replaced by Mikel Arteta. In the 28th minute, Arsenal got the lead through an Olivier Giroud header from a Mesut Ozil free-kick. But, West Brom put on a dogged performance, and turned the match on its head within the space of 12 minutes. On 35 minutes, James Morrison had equalized, with a fine volley, before Mikel Arteta calamitously deflected a James McClean cross into his own net.

Arsenal had majority of the possession, in the second half, but to no avail, as a well drilled West Brom defence marshalled by Jonas Olsson, put their bodies on the line several times, to take 3 points. Arsenal did miss guilt-edged opportunities though. Substitute Joel Campbell missed from 4 yards out with only keeper Boaz Myhill to beat, before Santi Cazorla slipped over his penalty. Craig Dawson then blocked a Kieran Gibbs shot from 6 yards out, as West Brom clinched the win.

Arsenal now host Dinamo Zagreb, in a must win Champions League clash, before travelling to Norwich City.

Arsenal 1 (Gibbs 77) – Tottenham Hotspur (Kane 32)

Man of the Match –Β Dele AlliΒ (Tottenham Hotspur)

Arsenal rescued a pivotal point in a closely contested derby game against Tottenham. Arsenal, reeling from their 5-1 mauling at the hands of German giants Bayern Munich, knew they were up for a tough game against Mauricio Pochettino’s revitalized Tottenham side.

Tottenham have lost just one game all season, away at Manchester United on opening day, while Arsenal needed a point to go level with Manchester City at the top. Mathieu Debuchy kept his place at right-back, with Hector Bellerin still injured, while Laurent Koscielny returned to replace Gabriel at the back. Tottenham kept the ball intelligently and sprayed it around well in the first half, and looked the more dangerous of the two.

Petr Cech was called on a few times to make saves, first of which was keeping out Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld’s header, before both Cristian Eriksen and Harry Kane shot wide of goal. Sp*rs took their much deserved lead in the 32nd minute, when Harry Kane raced past Per Mertesacker, having played in by left-back Danny Rose, who escaped the attentions of Laurent Koscielny. Arsenal’s first shot wouldn’t come until the 38th minute.

In a tactical ploy, Mathieu Flamini came on for Santi Cazorla, to stifle Tottenham’s star youngster Dele Alli. Arsenal relentlessly went in search of an equalizer, with Giroud going close twice with headers. The goal finally came in the 77th minute, when Kieran Gibbs got ahead of England team-mate Kyle Walker, to meet the end of a Mesut Ozil cross, to shoot past Hugo Lloris. Arsenal had gotten themselves out of jail!

Bayern Munich (Lewandowski 10, Mueller 29, Alaba 44, Robben 55, Mueller 89) – Arsenal 1 (Giroud 69)

Man of the MatchΒ – Thiago AlcantaraΒ (Bayern Munich)

Bayern pummelled Arsenal to submission, two weeks after having lost 2-0, at the Emirates, with a show of footballing prowess.Β Arsenal were no match to the rampant Bavarians, in their own backyard, and must now win both their remaining games, at home to Dynamo Kiev and away to Olympiakos to have a chance of qualifying to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Arsenal suffered a major setback ahead of the match, as both Laurent Koscielny and Hector Bellerin were ruled out, with Gabriel partnering Per Mertesacker at the back and Mathieu Debuchy starting at right-back, while Joel Campbell kept his place of the injured trio of Ramsey, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ramsey. Bayern’s relentless pressing and passing completely outdid the Gunners.

Robert Lewandowski kept his hot streak, opening the scoring on just 10 minutes, with Gabriel peeling off the Polish star. Mesut Ozil had a goal ruled out for handball, just minutes later, and it was just a marker of things to come. It was 2-0, on 29 minutes through a snapshot from Thomas Mueller. Gabriel was partly at fault again, giving Austrian defender David Alaba too much space to take a shot. He made it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time.

10 minutes into the break, Arjen Robben’s clever first time finish made it 4-0 on the night, and even though Arsenal pulled one back through Olivier Giroud’s volley 14 minutes later, it was too little too late. Thomas Mueller duly wrapped up the formalities with a calm finish on the 89th minute.

Arsenal now host Tottenham in the league, before travelling to West Brom, ahead of a key home game against Dynamo Kiev.

Swansea 0-3 Arsenal (Giroud 49, Koscielny 68, Campbell 73)

Man of the Match –Β Mesut OzilΒ (Arsenal)

Arsenal produced another solid second half away day display as they stayed level on points with league leaders Manchester City, with a resounding 3-0 win in Wales over a struggling Swansea. Having won 4 consecutive games on the trot, which included a 3-0 win over Manchester United and 2-0 win over Bayern Munich, Arsenal’s kids put up a cropper of a show against Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup, and an answer was required against Swansea.

The best chance of the first half fell to French international Bafetimbi Gomis, who was left clear with only Cech to beat, but managed to squander his chance. Swansea looked slightly the better side in the first half, but all the changed post the break. Olivier Giroud headed Arsenal into the lead in the 49th minute, before former Arsenal keeper Lukasz Fabianski was involved in a typically comical moment, as he slipped the ball into the path of Laurent Koscielny, who had the simple task of tapping the ball home to make it 2-0.

The game was put beyond doubt, when Mesut Ozil’s cross from the left wing was met by Joel Campbell, who managed to steer home, amidst a crowd of Swansea defenders. It was a solid performance overall, on an evening when Arsenal were required to prove their title credentials.

Sheffield Wednesday 3 (Wallace 27, Lucas Joao 40, Hutchinson 51) – Arsenal 0Β

Man of the Match –Β Ross WallaceΒ (Sheffield Wednesday)

Arsenal humiliatingly crashed out of the League Cup, with a lacklustre performance against Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. Arsene Wenger made a host of changes, with a tough fixture list coming up in mind. Mathieu Debuchy got a rare start at right-back in place of Hector Bellerin, while Per Mertesacker returned to the starting lineup and was partnered by Callum Chambers. Kieran Gibbs started at left-back. The midfield contained the unusual starters like Mathieu Flamini, Glen Kamara, Alex Iwobi and Joel Campbell, while there were starts for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Olivier GiroudΒ as well.

Arsenal had just one chance of real menace all night, from Mertesacker, which was tipped over by Joseph Wildsmith. Worryingly, for the Gunners, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain went down after just 5 minutes and had to be replaced by Theo Walcott, who himself had to go off 14 minutes later, to be replaced by Ismael Bennacer. Arsenal went a goal down on 27 minutes when former Sunderland and Burnely midfielder Ross Wallace scored the opening goal from 18 yards. And, just 13 minutes later, Hillsborough went into delirium, as Lucas Joao met the end of a Ross Wallace cross to make it 2-0 on the night.

The tie was put beyond Arsenal’s reach when Sam Hutchinson scored on 51 minutes, to compound a miserable night for the Gunners, who remain without a League Cup win since 1993. Arsenal next travel to Swansea, before travelling to Bayern Munich and hosting Tottenham.

Arsenal 2 (Giroud 36, Koscielny 38) – Everton 1 (Barkley 44)

Man of the Match –Β Mesut OzilΒ (Arsenal)

Arsenal overcame a gritty Everton, and shrugged off any pre match question marks over their fitness, after a physically and emotionally draining 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in midweek. There were some changes to the squad, with Gabriel coming in for Per Mertesacker at the back, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replaced an injured Aaron Ramsey. Olivier Giroud, who scored in his two last substitute appearances against Watford and Bayern Munich, was awarded a starting berth, while Theo Walcott dropped to the bench.

The game had a very cagey opening, with Everton allowing little space and time for Arsenal in the final third. However, the deadlock was broken on 36 minutes, when Olivier Giroud met the end of a Mesut Ozil cross with a subtle touch. And, they were 2-0 up, when Laurent Koscielny headed home from Santi Cazorla. Ross Barkley reduced the deficit on the stroke of half time, with a left footed effort past Petr Cech.

Belgian international Romelu Lukaku had chances late in the game, one of which he struck the bar with. On the second occasion, he was met by a strong unflinching tackle from Gabriel. Giroud and Ozil both struck the woodwork, as Arsenal failed to build on their slim lead in the second half. Phil Jagielka came out the worst in a tackle with Oxlade-Chamberlain and had to be taken off, as Arsenal held on for 3 vital points to move to the top of the Premier League.

Arsenal 2 Bayern Munich 0 – Bayern stunned by Arsenal resolve!

Arsenal 2 (Giroud 77, Ozil 94) – Bayern Munich 0

Man of the Match –Β Petr CechΒ (Arsenal)

Bayern’s brilliance eventually proved no match to Arsenal’s resolve, as the Gunners kept their European hopes alive, with a vital 2-0 win that would live long in the memory of Arsenal fans. Having taken confidence from consecutive 3-0 wins over Manchester United and Watford, Arsenal knew they had their work cut out against a brilliant Bayern side, probably the best football team on the planet at the moment.

Arsene Wenger named his strongest squad, having lost 2-1 at Dynamo Kiev, and 3-2 at home to Olympiakos, as Arsenal went in search of their first European win of the season. David Ospina, who was culpable of handing Olympiakos their win at the Emirates, was replaced by first choice Petr Cech, while Theo Walcott kept his place up front. Bayern named their strongest squad as well, with goal machine Robert Lewandowski leading the line, and the ever dangerous Brazilian winger Douglas Costa.

Polish international Robery Lewandowski, who made his way into the Guiness Book of World Records, for his 5 goal salvo against Wolfsburg, nearly opened the scoring against Arsenal, after just 30 seconds, with only a last ditch tackle from Hector Bellerin preventing him from scoring. The right back was then called offside moments later, before Arsenal created the chance of the game, with 7 minutes played. Alexis Sanchez drove into Bayern, setting up Ozil, whose right footed effort was saved by his childhood friend Manuel Neuer, and Theo Walcott couldn’t turn in the rebound from the narrowest of angles.

German striker Thomas Mueller then had a chance at the other end, but Petr Cech was equal to the point blank effort. Bayern enjoyed swathes of possession, with Arsenal happy to let the German champions play in front of them. Then, there were chances at both ends, as Walcott’s effort was palmed away by Neuer, before Cech had to make saves off the left foot of Lewandowski and Arturo Vidal. Then, Walcott and Alexis combined to set up the former, but he couldn’t time his shot properly, as Arsenal won a corner in the 30th minute. Alexis chested it down well, but his shot was way over the crossbar.

Arsenal were still creating problems for Manuel Neuer, and Theo Walcott was giving the German keeper some work to do. In the 34th minute, a Nacho Monreal cross came in from the left, and an unmarked Walcott headed it on target, only to be denied by a brilliant diving Neuer. Walcott could be forgiven for thinking he had scored. Walcott saw another effort saved by Neuer, before a shot from Douglas Costa flew over Cech’s head. Alexis then escaped a shout for penalty, when he handled the ball in the area, as the team went into half-time, level with no goals scored.

Bayern started the second half stronger, with a shot from Costa fizzing over the bar, and Lewandowski then actioning the Arsenal keeper into a save again. From the resulting corner, Costa drew a low save from Cech. On 56 minutes, Arsenal were forced into a substitution when Aaron Ramsey pulled his hamstring, and was replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Nacho Monreal and Mesut Ozil combined to set up Francis Coquelin, yet to open his goal scoring account for Arsenal, but the Frenchman’s shot was high and wide. Alexis lost the ball, which allowed Lewandowski to have a go at Cech, but he was thwarted just in time by Mertesacker, and the rebound from Alonso went wide. Bayern by now were dominating proceedings, and a rare chance for Walcott resulted in an easy save for Neuer.

The changes came ringing in when Bayern bought on Joshua Kimmich and Rafinha for Xabi Alonso and Arturo Vidal, while Olivier Giroud came on for Walcott. There was a moment of grave danger for Arsenal when it seemed Robert Lewandowski would go on and score, only for a fine last ditch tackle from Laurent Koscielny and a good save from Cech to avert the danger. Moments later, a Thomas Mueller shot went just wide.

The deadlock was finally broken, in the 77th minute. Not by a rampant Bayern, but by a resolute Arsenal. It was scrappy, but it was legitimate as the stadium erupted in one incredible moment of joy. A ball was floated in by Santi Cazorla. Manuel Neuer came to save, but completely missed. It struck Olivier Giroud on the head, and went in, with Jerome Boateng for close company. Giroud knew little of it, but Arsenal were leading 1-0.

Kieran Gibbs came on for Alexis, who had run himself to the ground, to reinforce his defence. Olivier Giroud had the chance to make it 2-0, but his header wasn’t well timed, and he came back to fulfil his defensive duties. Thiago Alcantara and Robert Lewandowski had further chances, but couldn’t capitalize.

Hector Bellerin made most of a turned off Bernat, made an interception in midfield, sped his way into Bayern’s penalty box and crossed in for an onrushing Mesut Ozil, who drew a brilliant save from Neuer, but the save was made behind the line, and Arsenal were awarded a goal. Neither Ozil, nor the stadium realized that it was a goal, till the assistant referee confirmed it, and the roof was bought down to the ground.

A famous and important win, on a night the entire team had to put in that extra effort!

Watford 0-3 Arsenal (Sanchez 62, Giroud 68, Ramsey 74)

Man of the Match –Β Mesut OzilΒ (Arsenal)

Arsenal put in a superb second half performance to beat a dogged Watford by 3 goals, at Vicarage Road. Laurent Koscielny returned to the squad and replaced Gabriel at the back, while Theo Walcott started again up front. However, despite his fine display against Manchester United, he was relatively quiet against the Hornets. Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, too were kept under wraps by a generally resilient Watford house.

However, Arsenal knew a win was absolutely essential to stay near the top of the table, and warm up for their Champions League clash with Bayern Munich. And they got exactly that, with Sanchez and Ozil showing their class. Sanchez pounced on a loose ball, when Mesut Ozil seemed to have been fouled inside the box on 62 minutes to break the deadlock.

And it was 2-0, just 6 minutes later, when Ozil’s cut back allowed Giroud to slam one past Heurelho Gomes. And the win was sealed, when Hector Bellerin drove into the box and set up Aaron Ramsey, who nicked the ball past the keeper to seal a 3-0 win.

Next up, Bayern Munich. Easy peasy.

Arsenal 3 (Sanchez 6, Ozil 7, Sanchez 19) – Manchester United 0

Man of the Match –Β Alexis SanchezΒ (Arsenal)

I have so explicitly made evident, in the past years, of my utter distaste of anything remotely Manchester United. More so, their hordes of plastic fans, who flash Manchester United apparel, in the thought that it would appear cool. Their constant rambling about how big fans of the club they were was such a pain, considering they didn’t know the next fixture; their goading about Cristiano Ronaldo, years after he left the club; their tasteless rendition of ‘Glory Glory Man. Utd’, and their ‘coming to the surface’ after United wins.

Games between Arsenal and Manchester United had almost become one sided over the past years, with the Londoners’ decade of transition coinciding with a golden period for United. Arsenal’s first win in almost 4 years came when Danny Welbeck, a United boy through and through pounced on a defensive error to deliver a 2-1 FA Cup win at Old Trafford. Arsenal’s last league win came in May 2011, when Aaron Ramsey scored on a sunny day at the Emirates, to reduce the gap at the top from 9 to 6 points. However, Manchester United would go on and lift the title.

Much of the pre-match talk focused on how Arsenal need to release their handbrakes early on in big games, to avoid falling behind. Defensive frailties in big games has been a big concern for the manager in recent years, but last season proved to be a small turning point, as Arsenal beat Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad, Liverpool 4-1 at the Emirates and United 2-1 at Old Trafford in the cup. On the lopside, the Gunners also managed to lose 2-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and 2-1 to Manchester United at home.

There were no surprises in the starting lineup, with Gabriel Paulista starting in place of the injured Laurent Koscielny. Manchester United don’t have any injury concerns, with Michael Carrick returning to the squad. Arsenal, instead of slowly making their way into the game, started in explosive fashion, which left Manchester United stunned, in a frantic opening few minutes.

A string of passes down United’s left, saw Mesut Ozil released, who then crossed in for Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean was perfectly placed right in front of goal, and cheekily flicked Ozil’s cross to make it 1-0, after just 6 minutes on the clock. And even before United could recover, some intricate passing between Sanchez and Ozil released the pacy Theo Walcott, who had Daley Blind to his left. Walcott created a bit of space, and set up Ozil, who deftly picked up the corner, leaving de Gea stranded, and Arsenal coasting at 2-0 after just 7 minutes on the clock.

The atmosphere in the stadium was crackling, as it had been quite some time when Arsenal had given United a real spanking in the league. Arsenal were still at it, pegging United back, and in the 20th minute the pressure told. Hector Bellerin’s throw released Aaron Ramsey, who gave the ball to Walcott. The Englishman swivelled and released an onrushing Alexis Sanchez, who cut inside a defender just outside the penalty box and smashed home a beauty to make it 3-0 after just 20 minutes.

Arsenal could have added to their tally in the first half, with Ramsey missing an absolute sitter, and Walcott dragging his shot wide. A rare chance for Manchester United fell to French striker Anthony Martial, but Petr Cech was equal to it, as the teams went into the break, with the Gunners enjoying a resounding 3-0 lead. The Czech keeper had a solid influence throughout the game, as the defence enjoyed their day out in the sun.

Louis van Gaal decided to throw on Marouanne Fellaini, to add some aerial ability to his side, but all the Belgian did was foul Arsenal players repeatedly, and manage to get away with it almost every single time. United definitely enjoyed more possession in the second half, as they tried to find at least a goal back. Arsenal’s game plan was simple, to allow United the freedom of the ball and hit them on the counter and trouble them with pace.

United, however, barely saw any chances come their way as the back 4 skilfully negotiated their way out of the game. The midfield duo of Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla were unflinching, to say the least. Their first real chance came in the 73rd minute, when Wayne Rooney, so often a thorn in Arsenal’s side, shot a low one, to Cech’s right, but the keeper had it within his grasp.

Bastian Schweinsteiger too had a go, when he was released with only Cech to beat, but again the keeper smothered the move. Arsene Wenger made some substitutions, bringing on Olivier Giroud, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kieran Gibbs in place of Theo Walcott, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, as he looked to close out the game.

Arsenal could still have added to their tally, but Giroud’s shot was straight at de Gea, and Chamberlain’s effort went just over the crossbar. All in all, a perfect afternoon, and the right result!
